New generation candidates outshine BGMEA election

Apparel Correspondent: Candidates have started campaigns for the upcoming Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) election in the country’s readymade garments (RMG) industry.

The election will select the BGMEA's new Board of Directors for 2021-23.

This year, the participation of the highest number of new generation candidates is the most shining part of the election. In the election, 70 candidates of the two panels named Sammilita Parishad and Forum are contesting for the posts of 35 Directors of Dhaka and Chattogram. Although there were only a few new generation candidates in the previous Board of Directors, this time 10 new generation candidates are contesting for the post of Directors. They all have joined their family business after completing higher education.

Faruque Hassan, Managing Director of Giant Group, is leading Sammilita Parishad. On the other hand, ABM Shamsuddin, Chairman of Hannan Group, is leading Forum.

Tanvir Ahmed and Sheherin Salam Oishee, Directors of Envoy Group; Imranur Rahman, Director of Laila Styles Ltd; Miran Ali, Managing Director of Misami Garments Ltd and Tanvir Habib, Director of Legacy fashion Ltd.

Among them, Miran Ali is the current Director of BGMEA. Tanvir Ahmed’s father is Kutubuddin Ahmed, Chairman and founder of Envoy Group.

Sheherin Salam Oishee’s father is Abdus Salam Murshedy and Imranur Rahman's father is former BGMEA President Siddiqur Rahman.

Navidul Huq, Director of MG Knit Flair Ltd; Shah Rayeed Chowdhury, Director of Evitex Dress Shirt Ltd; Khan Monirul Islam, Managing Director of Fashion Dot Com Ltd, Rana Laila Hafiz, Managing Director of Trouser Line Ltd and Vidiya Amrit Khan, Director of Desh Garments Ltd.

Here Vidiya Amrit Khan has joined the board of BGMEA earlier. Others are contesting for the first time. Navidul Huq is a son of former BGMEA President Annisul Huq and current BGMEA President Dr Rubana Huq.

Besides, Shah Rayeed Chowdhury’s father is former BGMEA President Anwar-Ul Alam Chowdhury.

The election is scheduled to be held at Hotel Radisson Blue in Dhaka and the regional office of BGMEA in Chattogram from 10am to 5pm on April 4.
