Govt support needed for seizing opportunities in apparel sector 

Apparel Correspondent: Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Faruque Hassan said the government could play a supportive role in harnessing the emerging opportunities of Bangladesh's textile and ready-made garment(RMG) industry and tackling the industry's challenges.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, on Wednesday, 26 January in the Prime Minister's Office.

BGMEA 1st Vice President Syed Nazrul Islam, Vice President Shahidullah Azim, Vice President Miran Ali and Director Asif Ashraf were present on the occasion.

BGMEA President Faruque Hassan handed over a check for a grant of Tk 1.5 crore to Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus.

BGMEA has given this grant to the Prime Minister's Fund to help the victims of the COVID-19 pandemic.

BGMEA leaders also discussed the strategies to deal with the challenges of Bangladesh's apparel sector with Dr. Ahmad Kaikaus.

In their discussion, they highlighted the potential effects from the Least developed countries (LDCs) category of Bangladesh as well as possible influence in export-oriented trade and the LDCs preparation to tackle new challenges later.

They also discussed the priorities of the sector to adapt to the future with the fourth industrial revolution (FIR) and with the changes in the global apparel industry.

Faruque Hassan expressed his sincere gratitude and appreciation to the government on behalf of the apparel industry family for supporting the industry during the first and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the assistance has helped the industry survive and turn around by tackling challenges.

He added that the garment industry is currently focusing on redefining the business structure and making the industry sustainable and cost-effective through innovation, product diversification and technology upgradation, and value addition.

He said government assistance was essential for the sector to prepare for the challenges of the textile and RMG industry and to harness the opportunities and potentials of the industry.
