Faruque Hassan becomes new BGMEA President

Apparel Correspondent: Sammilita Parishad panel leader and Managing Director of Giant Group Faruque Hassan has become the new President of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

His panel has won the biennial election for the board of directors of the BGMEA for 2021-23 which was held from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm at Hotel Radisson Blu in Dhaka and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the regional office of BGMEA in Chattogram on Sunday, April 4.

The Sammilita Parishad bagged 24 out of 35 directors’ posts, while the remaining 11 director posts were elected from the Forum panel, led by the Chairman of Hannan Group and a former Vice-President of BGMEA ABM Shamsuddin. In the election Faruque Hassan got 1,204 votes while ABM Shamsuddin got 904 votes.

The BGMEA polls witnessed a voters’ turnout of 86 per cent. Out of the 1853 voters in Dhaka, some 1604 BGMEA members cast their votes while out of the 461 voters in Chattogram, some 392 voters cast their votes in Chattogram.

Meanwhile, leaders of the contesting two panels have claimed that the election was held in a free, fair, and peaceful manner. Some 70 candidates from two panels contested for the post of 35 directors.

The new board will take over their charge on April 20.

Who is Faruque Hassan?

Faruque Hassan was born on August 9, 1962 to a renowned business family in Thakurgaon district of Bangladesh. From childhood, he showed a great sense of responsibility and leadership. His early schools were St. Margaret School, Lalmatia and Lake View School, Dhanmondi, Dhaka. During his school days, he took leadership in all extracurricular activities.

He completed his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) from the country's two leading educational institutions Residential Model School, Dhaka and Dhaka College.

He completed his post-graduation in Management from Dhaka University. During his university days, he played and represented 1st division hockey league in Mohammedan Sporting Club and Sadharan Bima. He also played Cricket and represented Lalmatia Boys Club and Abahani Limited Dhaka.

Faruque Hassan started his career back in 1982 and his visionary leadership as the Managing Director made Gant Group one of the top RMG manufacturers and exporters in the country.

Hassan has been putting relentless efforts into the development of the apparel and textile industry of Bangladesh.

He served Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) as elected Director for two consecutive tenures 2001-2002, 2003-2004. He also served the apex apparel trade of the country as Vice President for two consecutive terms from 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 and as Senior Vice-President from 22nd September 2015 till 2019.

The Honorary Consul General of Greece to Bangladesh, Vice President of Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI), Member of the Advisory Board of the RMG Project of Telenor Health, and Founder member of Board of Trustee at BGMEA University of Fashion & Technology (BUFT), Hassan has also served as the President of the Dutch-Bangla Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DBCCI).

Hassan aspires to make the Bangladesh RMG industry a role model of green industrialization in the world.
