USD 5 billion leather export possible

Apparel correspondent: Commerce Secretary Dr Md Jafar Uddin said leather is a potential sector of Bangladesh. We have raw materials and skilled manpower.

There is a huge demand for leather and leather products in different countries. If we can make full use of our capabilities, it is possible to export more than $5 billion worth of leather and leather products annually.

The Commerce Secretary said this as the chief guest at the inaugural function of a workshop on leather and leather products under the Export Competitiveness for Jobs (EC4J) project of the Ministry of Commerce at Hotel 71 in Dhaka on Thursday, February 25.

The secretary said the Ministry of Commerce has undertaken a project called EC4J to boost exports of the country's leather and leather products, footwear and plastics sectors. The project is also working to make everyone involved in these sectors skillful. Huge employment opportunities will be created in these sectors and exports will increase.

Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce (Exports) and Project Director of the EC4J Md Hafizur Rahman spoke as special guests.

Among others, Mohiuddin Ahmed Mahin, Chairman of Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather goods and Footwear Exporters Association (BFLLFEA), Shaheen Ahmed, President of Bangladesh Tanners' Association (BTA) and Md Abdur Rahim, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce were also present on the occasion.
